Who’s Your Daddy?

By: Rafael | April 6th, 2009

Coming into this game, all the media was talking about was the fact that Pumas had not been able to defeat Cruz Azul in more than 3 years. Apparently 3 years to the media, is 10 years because every mofo down at TV Azteca was getting wet about Pumas not being able to defeat Cruz Azul. Yes, they defeated us in last years liguilla and took us out of championship contention. Yes, they defeated a Pumas reserve squad in the CONCACAF Champions League. Should i repeat that? RESERVE SQUAD! (It is not my fault Tuca Ferreti didn’t take the Tournament seriously.) Yet, coming into this game everybody said Cruz Azul was Pumas’s daddy.

Therefore, coming into saturday all paternity allegations would be cleared. No need fo Maury on this one guys. In a game many consider a Clasico(not me), the stage was set down at the Azul for what would be a hell of a match. I’ll be honest, i felt confident about my team coming out on top despite the media overexaggerating the situation. Off course i had the thousands of travelling fans that just had to cross the street from CU to the Azul to thank for that. Once again, we outnumbered our rivals in their home turf. Outnumbering our opponent in away games is becoming the norm in these days (San Luis, America, and now Cruz Azul.)

We weren’t given much to celebrate about early in the game. In the 26th minute, Torrado shot a laser right in the corner of the net to put Cruz Azul in front. The sun block filled Mexican International hit the ball perfectly in what is sure to be one of the goals of the season. Torrado is actually a product of our youth system, which made it hurt more. The goal was also a reminiscentof the goal Torrado scored last year that ended our title hopes.

1 Minute later it will all change. In the very next play, we threw the ball forward and the debutant goalie Alfonso Blanco mistakenly came out rushing to get the ball away leaving the goal empty. Dante with a fine strike tied the game 1-1 as he celebrated with the fans. Beltran did everything he could but Dante’s strike slowly creeped into Alfonso Blanco’s net. Not a good way to start off his career for the Mexico U-20 goalkeeper.

After that, it was Pumas who was starting to take the initiative. A successful breakaway lands on the feet of Efrain Velarde who crossed the ball nicely to Martin Bravo. Martin Bravo with a world class reception managed to get the ball on the foot he wanted and shot the ball in the back of the net. In 5 minutes, Pumas had scored 2 goals to get a 1 goal cushion before the break.

In the second half, more of Pumas. David Toledo who was the surprise in the starting line up crossed the ball to the center of the box and the small guy Íñiguez took advantage of Bonet’s poor marking and put the game beyond all doubt.

The Blue onslaught started shortly after. Bernal was sensational though. The old man stopped everything Cruz Azul was throwing at him. The Cruz Azul players never gave up and in the 86th minute, it all payed off with Lugo finally getting through Bernal to put the game 3-2. It would be a thrilling last few minutes, but no more goals will be scored. Final score, Pumas 3 Cruz Azul 2.

Game of the week? No doubt! Our good form continues. We lead Group 2 with 4 more points than our closest rival America in second and lead all top 4 teams in points. Up next is Puebla in what will be a tricky game. ORGULLO AZUL Y ORO!!
