Just 2 weeks after the US defeated Mexico in Colombus , the rivalry is renewed

By: Rafael | February 24th, 2009

Some of you are getting ready to skip work and ditch class , like in my case, to watch a relatively new rivalry that has arisen between English and Italian clubs in what for many is the second biggest tournament in the world, after the World Cup, the UEFA Champions league. There is nothing more exciting then watching the biggest names of football fight out for that big eared beauty.

But Europe isn’t the only place where there is going to be Champions League action at. The CONCACAF Champions League resumes this week. 8 teams are going to look to win this one which includes 4 mexican teams, 1 Puerto Rican, 1 Honduran, 1 Canadian, and a measly 1 American team. Yes, for years Mexican teams have dominated this tournament much like the recent dominance of English teams in the Champions League. The 2 games that highlight this round of fixtures is the derby game between my beloved Pumas and Cruz Azul. The other is a game many of you should pay attention to. Atlante will play Houston Dynamo in Robertson Stadium in the first leg which promises to be a thrilling tie between a Mexican and American side.

It isn’t just the National teams that go all out at each other, but the Clubs too. Match ups between clubs from both countries have ended up in everything you love to see in rivalries. MLS teams are in the middle of pre-season work and Dynamo lost key players. Their motivation is that they are the only MLS team, and as the debate of whether the US is finally king of the CONCACAF lingers, Houston Dynamo is going to look to win this one and put the US’s name in soccer up high. All i can say is good luck to everybody as I will be cheering for my Mexican sides to come out on top.

Here is a taste of what you might see as Atlante players and New England Revolution players go at it at the end of a Superliga game. Expect some more of this

I also want to give a shout out to my peeps from Yahoo Answers.

Atlante could win 10-0, it won’t stop the ‘dos a cero’ chants from up north.

I agree that the Houston Dynamo are measly, and should be rounded up and forced to get their vaccinations up to date.

Problem with the Concacaf champs league is that nobody cares. How do you get people to care? It should be concentrated timewise, instead of spread out over a year. UEFA can get away with that, Concacaf can’t.
